Name Change

INDIANHEAD & BLACKJACK ARE NOW SNOWRIVER MOUNTAIN RESORT

Welcome to the dawn of a new era in Midwest skiing – welcome to Snowriver Mountain Resort! Formerly known as the Big Snow Resorts of Indianhead and Blackjack, our beloved winter wonderland has undergone a monumental transformation, and we can't wait to share the excitement with you.

In 2022, Midwest Family Ski Resorts (the proud owners of iconic ski destinations like Lutsen Mountains, Minnesota, and Granite Peak, Wisconsin) took the helm of Big Snow Resorts. Since then we've spared no expense, investing over $10 million to elevate your skiing and riding experience to new heights.

But why the name change? It's about embracing a new era in ownership and respecting cultural agency. In light of calls for reform regarding Indigenous communities, we felt it was the perfect moment to usher in a new brand for these two beloved properties.

“There are two motivating factors for the coming name changes,” stated Skinner in a press release. “The first is a sensitivity to co-opting Native American culture. And the second is to eliminate confusion as the name Big Snow is used by another ski operation. We also feel the name changes help signal a new era of capital investment at Snowriver.” - Charles Skinner, President & Owner of Midwest Family Ski Resorts.

Snowriver Mountain Resort is not just a name; it's a declaration of our commitment to inclusivity, progress, and a reinvigorated passion for skiing and riding in the Upper Peninsula. The name "Snowriver" (100% developed by the Skinner Family) comes from our commitment to the snow on the slopes with a nod to the location with both the Jackson Creek and Black River converging at the base of our two-mountain resort.

One of our crown jewels is the spectacular Jackson Creek Summit, formerly known as Indianhead. Brace yourselves for the grand debut of the region's first high-speed six-pack chairlift – the Voyageur Express 6. Launching in December 2023, this game-changer promises to whisk you from the base to the summit in just three minutes, revolutionizing your adventure with more slope time and fewer queues.

The transformation extends beyond the slopes to the Sugar Maple Chalet (formerly Indianhead Chalet), where we've infused new life into its 74-year-old charm. From new furniture and carpet to updated ticket windows and retail spaces, every corner exudes the warmth of modern hospitality. The rental experience has been reimagined, ensuring your gear matches the excitement of the slopes.
