Our History

Snowriver Resort in Wakefield, MI, has a proud history that began in the late 1950s when Jack English opened Indianhead Mountain Resort, helping to establish the western Upper Peninsula as a premier Midwest skiing destination.

Over the decades, the resort grew and evolved, merging with Blackjack Mountain in 2008 to become Big Snow Resort and then reimagined in 2022 as Snowriver Mountain Resort following a major acquisition and revitalization.

While the resort now features modern amenities, including the Upper Peninsula's first high-speed six-person chairlift, it still retains parts of its original infrastructure. Guests may notice that hot water can take up to 30 minutes to arrive, and that the old boilers and pipes may creak and bang along the way. These sounds are part of the charm — echoes of a long and storied past.

Today, Snowriver is proud to be part of Midwest Family Ski Resorts, a family of three beloved Midwest mountain destinations that also includes Granite Peak Ski Area in Wausau, Wisconsin and Lutsen Mountains on Minnesota's North Shore.
